Are Yoga Retreats Really That Expensive? Let’s Break It Down
Do you dream of traveling through the rolling hills of Tuscany or Australia’s Gold Coast?
Maybe it’s absorbing the sweeping landscape of a stunning Montana ranch or Maine’s rocky coast.
Or immersing in the exotic culture of Bali or the wild savannahs of Kenya’s Masai Mara?
Or maybe it’s not about the specific place as much as indulging in world-class, healthy cuisine, deepening your yoga practice, connecting with local people through meaningful service, and exploring iconic landmarks and locations—all without the stress of planning every detail?
That sounds amazing. But when you see the price tag on a yoga retreat, it can also be easy to hesitate.
We get it. Seeing a total price tag in the thousands can feel intimidating. But before you write your dream of a metamorphic adventure off as “too indulgent” or “unreasonably expensive,” let’s break it down and compare what it would actually cost to plan this type of experience on your own. I’ll use Italy as an example destination because Lauren and I are in the midst of planning the final details for On Point Yoga Adventure’s ‘Into the Wilds of Tuscany Italy Yoga Adventure this May….I have Italy on the brain!
Accommodations in the Italian Countryside
A boutique stay in a stunning countryside villa? You’re looking at approximately $200+ per night—and that’s just for a room. For an entire week, that adds up to at least $1,400 (before taxes and fees). For retreats, as hosts, we buy out the entire villa so you not only have a room but exclusive use and enjoyment of the entire property with your fellow participants.
Daily Meals: Three Farm-to-Table Feasts a Day
Dining out in Italy is an experience unto itself, but the costs can add up fast. Expect to spend at least $75 daily on three quality meals, totaling $525 or more for the week. And that doesn’t include wine, espresso, or the occasional gelato. On retreat, our private Italian chef is included in the cost. It’s true!… her name is Elena, and she loves to laugh, connect, and treat guests like family; she’ll even teach you to prepare Cacio y Pepe from scratch!
Transportation & Private Guided Tours
If you plan to explore Tuscany, you must rent a car or hire private transportation. Car rentals typically run about $500+ for a week, not including gas, tolls, and insurance. Private tours and guides? Easily $150+ per excursion, exceeding $1200 for multiple guided outings. At On Point Yoga Adventures, we balance our yoga, meditation, and relaxation time with exciting, off-the-beaten-path excursions. We’ll visit iconic destinations, including Vie Cave in Sorano, the medieval city of Siena, Pigelleto Natural Reserve, Bagno Vignoni, premier wineries of Chianti, and more.
Daily Yoga & Wellness
Drop-in yoga classes average $25 per session. At that rate, a week of daily, sometimes twice daily, classes would cost $250 or more without additional workshops or specialty events. A yoga retreat is the perfect opportunity to cultivate healthy habits such as daily movement, mindfulness, and meditation. At On Point Yoga Adventures, your teachers bring over 15 years of professional experience teaching yoga, fitness, meditation, breathwork, and more. Travel and discovery have many benefits, all of which become magnified when we feel healthy, energized, present, and connected in body and mind.
Personal Coaching & Transformation
If you currently work with an experienced Clinical Professional Counselor or a coach, you know those sessions typically start at $150 per hour. Add in multiple transformational sessions throughout a week, and you’re looking at $600+ for a profoundly supportive, life-changing experience. As mental health counselors, we braid targeted inquiry, discussion, and coaching throughout our retreats to help you clarify your core values and what truly matters most. Better yet, we provide tools to integrate that renewed clarity into your daily life at home.
The True Cost of “Doing It Yourself”
Here is a recap of what you’d spend “on your own” for a week-long transformational yoga adventure in Italy:
Accommodations: $1,400+
Meals: $525 +
Transportation & Private Tours: $1,200 +
Yoga & Wellness Sessions: $250+
Coaching & Personal Development: $600+
Total: $4050+ (not including flights, planning time, and the stress of logistics)
